She's smart, witty, and the list that she compiles before her death is exactly what you'd expect from a sixteen year old: Adam lives next door to Tessa.
Adam strokes my head, my face, he kisses my tears. She knows this, her family knows, everyone does. I have to mention the amazing supporting characters, Tessa's dad in particular. Tessa's dad is constantly worrying about her, and is looking stuff up on the computer to try to cure her.
Yet the intolerability of what's to come spotlights a subtle truth, which Downham has captured well. The message might be directed as much to her readers as to her dad. Her divorced parents struggle to accept that their daughter will die soon, while her younger brother Cal is cheerful and matter-of-fact about the situation.
They said it would, but this is quicker than anyone thought. Overall an amazing book, and a well-deserved five stars. Later, she realises that Zoey has none of the gravitas and emotional grounding she has garnered through her own illness. Read this book if you liked: Even in her last moments Cal makes jokes such as "Bye, Tess.
Wanting, wanting so much. Of the boy she loses her virginity to: I've never read a book that made me feel such a muddle of emotions, and I loved how the writing meant I was able to smile through my tears. I remember going to her funeral, thinking of how brave and amazing she'd been, and wondered what she'd felt.
She asks her best friend Zoey to ensure she carries out the list no matter what. You gave up work for me, friends for me, four years of your life for me.
Everyone has to die. Then there's her younger brother Cal, who's acting brave, but inside is obviously hurting over losing his big sister. Later, she realises that Zoey has none of the gravitas and emotional grounding she has garnered through her own illness. Tessa meets Adam, the kind of cute boy next door.
It tells you right there in the title. Getting her divorced parents back together. Tessa's best friend Zoey was pretty amazing too. Tessa, with the help of her best friend Zoey, comes up with a list of things she wants to do before she dies, including some risky behaviours that she deems necessary to have "lived".
Early on in the book, Tessa, Adam and Zoey go to the woods and take magic mushrooms. Yes, this is a book about death and dying, but it shows you just how important life is. I'll be seriously worried if readers of Before I Die don't cry at some point during the book.
And sometimes the most unexpected things become important. The characters were amazing. Clearly many readers do not agree with me — the reviews on Amazon are nearly hysterical in their admiration for this book.
Haunt me if you like. Also during these questionable situations, Downham goes into great detail of everything that is occurring, specifically the sex scenes. From all this suffering. Fighting back against hospital visits, endless tests, and drugs with excruciating side effects, Tessa compiles a list.
Tessa's hope, bravery and life was contagious, and I found myself praying for a miracle, hoping with all my heart that it would turn out differently for her."This may sound too depressing for words, but it is only one indication of the inspired originality of Before I Die, by Jenny Downham, that the reader can finish its last pages feeling thrillingly alive /5().
